Roblox adds AI texture generation and imported mesh segmentation
September 28, 2026
An imported car mesh can now become separate, named parts in Studio. A plain prop can get a new texture without rebuilding its geometry. Roblox's September 23 creator update also adds image previews for generated meshes and procedural models. Together, the changes give creators more control over the path from rough asset to usable game object.
Restyle an existing mesh with a generated texture
Select a mesh or a model made of meshes and open texture generation from the Studio ribbon, right-click Generate > Texture, or enter /generate_texture in Assistant. Describe the look you want, preview the result, and refine the prompt. Roblox positions generated textures as a starting point: you can export them for further editing in your preferred texturing software.
The Texture Generator documentation says the tool is currently in beta and explains its preview and Save & Apply workflow. It works best for a coherent mesh or group of meshes. For repeating surfaces such as a wood floor, Roblox recommends Material Generator instead.
Split an imported mesh into named parts
Segmentation was previously available for generated meshes. The update extends it to imported meshes. Select the imported mesh, open Assistant, and enter /segment_mesh. In the dialog, name up to five parts you want to separate, then select Segment. To split a part further, run the command again on that resulting part.
Part names are more than labels: Roblox says they guide which portion of the mesh Assistant assigns to each part. Names such as “wheel,” “body,” and “window” tell it more than “part 1” and “part 2.” A Roblox staff reply says AI identifies the named regions, then an algorithm cuts the mesh while preserving its mesh and UVs. The result depends on the source geometry; overlapping triangles between intended parts can cause trouble.
A practical use is an imported vehicle with a single mesh: separate wheels and body so you can change materials or attach behavior to the components. Inspect the result before building scripts around the new parts.
Choose a preview or supply a reference image
For a text prompt in Assistant's /generate_mesh or /generate_procedural_model flow, confirm the segmentation plan to generate four image previews. Choose the preview closest to your intended shape and style, then confirm it to build the model.
A reference image follows a different path. Upload a Hint Image in the segmentation setup, or switch /generate_mesh from Prompt to Image input mode. The Assistant guide says adding a Hint Image skips preview generation and creates the final model directly. It also says /generate_mesh accepts either text or an image for a request, rather than both together.
How this fits an AI-assisted workflow
- Generate a rough mesh or import one you already have.
- For a text prompt, choose among four image previews; for a Hint Image, expect direct model generation.
- Segment an imported mesh when separate pieces need different materials or behavior.
- Generate a texture for the finished mesh, then inspect and refine it in Studio or a texture editor.
The new texture and segmentation commands are described for Studio's Assistant. Roblox's published Studio MCP tool list includes mesh and procedural model generation, but does not list separate generate_texture or segment_mesh tools. BloxBot users can use the new Studio commands alongside an external AI workflow; direct MCP access to those two commands has not been announced.
For a concrete example of why asset preparation and game logic need separate checks, see the GPT-6 Astra Roblox racer prompt breakdown. It specifies mesh import, materials, collisions, Luau gameplay, and full-race playtests as distinct steps.
Frequently asked questions
Can Roblox Studio generate a new texture for an existing mesh?
Yes. Select one mesh or a model made from meshes, then use the ribbon, right-click Generate > Texture, or Assistant's /generate_texture command to restyle it.
Can Roblox segment a mesh I imported into Studio?
Yes. Select the imported mesh and run /segment_mesh in Assistant. Name up to five parts per pass; you can repeat the command on a resulting part to split it further.
Can I use a reference image for Roblox AI 3D generation?
Yes. A text-prompt generation offers four image previews. If you upload a Hint Image during the segmentation setup, Assistant skips previews and generates the final model directly. /generate_mesh also accepts an image instead of a text prompt.
